The Path to Real-World Independence
The Black Pines Way
At Black Pines, we don’t offer services—we offer a path forward. Our approach is shaped by values, forged in real-world experiences, and led by mentors who’ve walked their own journeys. Here’s what makes our program not just different, but deeply transformational.
Outdoor Adventure
We use Utah’s natural playground—mountains, trails, and snow—to build more than just memories. Activities like skiing, mountain biking, and hiking help develop resilience, confidence, and connection. These experiences challenge participants physically and mentally while creating space for mentorship, teamwork, and meaningful growth outside the walls of traditional therapy.
Mentorship
Every participant is paired with a life coach who provides consistent support, goal setting, and accountability. But mentorship here isn’t limited to check-ins—it happens on the trail, at the gym, and in everyday moments. This relational model fosters trust and creates real growth through shared experiences.
Community Living
Participants live in shared homes—like The Cottonwood House—where they learn accountability, cooperation, and responsibility. Structured routines and shared spaces create opportunities to build healthy habits and social awareness. This supportive environment mirrors the realities of adult life while offering daily guidance and mentorship.
Life Skills Training
From budgeting and job prep to cooking and time management, we teach the practical skills that independence requires. These aren't just workshops—they're hands-on, real-life experiences integrated into daily life. Participants leave Black Pines with the tools to manage their responsibilities and move forward with purpose and capability.
Therapeutic Support
We offer weekly/monthly therapy sessions and family coaching as part of a holistic mental wellness plan. Our approach balances emotional support with real-world application, helping participants process challenges while developing healthier mindsets. Therapy at Black Pines is integrated, accessible, and rooted in forward progress.
Service/Volunteer Work
Giving back builds perspective and purpose. We organize volunteer opportunities that connect participants with the community and help them see their value beyond themselves. Whether it’s service projects or local outreach, this work cultivates empathy, responsibility, and pride in contributing to something bigger.
“You cannot dream yourself into a character; you must hammer and forge yourself one.”

What We Stand For
Connection
Building meaningful relationships with mentors, peers, and the community.
At Black Pines, connection starts with intentional mentorship. Each participant is paired with a life coach who guides them daily—through workouts, hikes, chores, and one-on-one conversations. Living in shared homes creates natural peer bonds, and local service projects connect participants with the broader community, reminding them they’re part of something bigger.
Wellness
Promoting mental, emotional, and physical health for a balanced life.
Wellness here is holistic. We provide access to weekly therapy sessions, encourage daily movement through outdoor adventure and gym access, and promote routines that support better sleep, nutrition, and emotional regulation. Whether it's a mountain trail or a meaningful counseling session, every part of the day supports internal stability.
Independence
Equipping young men with the tools and confidence to thrive on their own.
Our phased structure builds independence gradually. Early phases focus on establishing routines and life skills. Over time, participants take on more responsibility—managing finances, applying for jobs or school, and planning their own weekly schedules. They leave with a sense of agency, ready to face life with confidence and capability.
